Aaron and Aidan go to White Castle and we all make it to Illinois

Day 1 - Overall it was a success and we made it the 750 miles to Ferne Clyffe State Park. We left at 11:53pm on Friday, the 13th and arrived at our destination at 2:30pm on Saturday the 14th.

Things we discovered:
  1. Lin and Aidan are good at sleeping in the car.
  2. Aaron and I are not good car sleepers.
  3. We get better gas mileage than expected! Yay!
  4. I can drive the truck with a 30 foot trailer attached through a busy city center with lots of interchanges.
  5. We were able to remain nice to one another until we went on a hike on a super hot day and got slightly lost in an area with lots of cliffs and steep climbs after being in a car together for a really long time. Now we are back in air conditioning with water and dinner in our near future so civility is emerging again! Note to self - a description of the trails is not really useful when one doesn't know where one is. Must learn to bring actual maps on these adventures.
Other than driving for a really LONG time highlights included:
The boys recently watched Harold and Kumar go to White Castle so they were super excited to visit it for breakfast this morning. I passed on this experience!

A stop at this National Battlefield to stretch our legs and eat breakfast. It was hot...really hot so we didn't do too much exploring but did enjoy the visitor center, friendly rangers and getting our second cancellation in our National Parks book.

Our campsite for the night. A convenient pull through site in a pretty park.

Hiking around the park that had amazing rock formations and cliffs.

Aidan was wearing an appropriate hat since we did get slightly lost while trying to take a "shortcut" back to the campsite.

Aaron might have seemed grouchy and tired but he sure was strong holding up all that rock.

Us hiking up the giant hill that the picture doesn't do justice to after our "shortcut" went horribly wrong.
Day 2 will involve driving another 750 miles to Lake Vermillion Recreational Area in South Dakota so we are all heading to bed in the near future!

  2. Also, don't know how you had so much self control. I vividly remember the smell and taste of white castle burgers. I would of ordered extra for the road :P

    1. lol...never had it so was easy to resist. For other things, like Gail's baking, I had absolutely no self control.
